Retrofit is the first major solo exhibition by London based artist Andrew Corlett. Showcasing a selection of large screen prints, handmade photomontage and stop-frame animations.
Since moving to London from Leeds Andrew has exhibited work in several major group shows around London and has most recently shown work in New York.
Andrew prefers using analog rather than digital methods to make his work. He enjoys having the materials around him so he can work in an instinctive and expressionistic way. In this spirit, Andrew works in several different mediums. From photomontage and printmaking to illustration, photography and stop-frame animation. Retrofit will mainly concentrate on his photomontage and screen printed work.
Andrew collects images from books he finds in charity shops to make his photomontage work "I collect unusual and rare images from second hand books. I enjoy this process of searching for and collecting images because it’s as if the images find me not vice versa." He combines the different perspectives and moods of the images to create surreal landscapes and absurd juxtapositions. Andrews screen prints are mostly enlarged versions of his photomontage work. During printing Andrew mixes colours on the screen to create marbling effects and colour blends. " I like to experiment while I'm printing, I don't want to make every print the same."
Andrews stop-frame animations are an exercise in camera trickery and syncopation. He combines time lapses, cut-up photos and claymation in his films.
"My animations are more collections of visual ideas, which take you on a journey, rather than, a collection of scenes put together to tell a story."
