Teoma Naccarato is a choreographer, performer, and educator from Montreal, Canada. Naccarato presently resides in London, England where she is pursuing a practice-based PhD at the Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE) at Coventry University. Her creations for stage, installation and screen integrate contemporary dance with responsive video, audio and biosensor technologies to explore vulnerability and intimacy in live and virtual interactions. Teoma is driven by curiosity regarding ways in which we read and write meaning in bodies, via sensory and technologically mediated processes – on stage and off.
Since 2004, Naccarato has shared choreography across Canada, the United States, South America, and Europe, with recent presentations of Experience #1167 (Chicago, Columbus, Montreal, Copenhagen 2012-2014), X: Duet for Dancer and Kinect (Berkeley, Copenhagen 2013), and Dirt: cyber-solo (Montreal, London 2012). Naccarato has performed internationally with choreographers Robert Wechsler, Michael Montanaro, Marianne Desjardins, Catherine Castonguay, and Ilona Dougherty (2004-2014).
Naccarato’s current artistic practice focuses on relationships between physiological processes with human movement and interactive environments. In Autumn 2014 she was awarded an Artist Research Residency at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, France. She is also involved with interactive media and movement research at the Centre for New Music and Audio Technologies at UC Berkeley (2013-2015), and the Topological Media Lab at Concordia University (2011-2015).
Naccarato has enjoyed appointments as a full-time Visiting Artist in Dance at Concordia University (2013-2014), Sam Houston State University (2013), Florida State University (2012), and the Ohio State University 2011). Teoma received an MFA in Dance and Technology at the Ohio State University (2011), and a BFA in Contemporary Dance at Concordia University (2004).
