Sunyoung Hwang

Location: London

Sunyoung Hwang (b. 1988) was born in Seoul and currently lives and works in London. She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL in 2012 and the Royal College of Art in 2016, and is the most recent winner of the Chadwell Award and has previously won the Steer Memorial Prize for painting. She is currently having the residency studio as the 2016 - 17 Chadwell Award winner.
With her continued interest in sensing and perceiving incorporeality, Sunyoung's work explores the realms of the intangible, such as absence, emptiness, and silence. To reach these intangibles, her work has a sensation that can be perceived in silent contemplation in terms of its ambiguous sense of time and place, evoking a liminal state of mind. Believing in the process rather than the end result, Sunyoung has developed a way of working which uses the stream-of-consciousness technique to visualise her internalised ideas and images. This is because she focus on her intuition and instinct rather than a plan or intention. She work directly onto the canvas without reference to preliminary sketches, drawings, or photographs and therefore, the entire process of her work happens only on the canvas.
Sunyoung has exhibited in solo and group exhibition internationally in the UK, France, Iceland, and Korea, and her work is in private collections in the UK, the United States, Asia, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates.
