Safina Projects is a collaboration of artist Rashad Salim and project manager Hannah Lewis.
We create art and cultural research projects that explore the craft traditions of Iraq and ancient Mesopotamia, seeking to protect and revitalise the region's endangered heritage. We carry out fieldwork to understand and document Iraqi craft techniques, particularly the construction of traditional boats and watercraft.
Our artwork and research (in partnership with universities and museums) engages with and celebrates this heritage. We collaborate with local, national and international partners to build capacity in the crafts sector of Iraq and develop new applications and markets for traditional skills.
Key milestones in the coming year (2018-19) are a series of reconstructions of traditional and ancient Mesopotamian boats, which will be documented through photography, video and oral history recordings and presented as an online museum, The Ark Re-imagined.
