My work often investigates people’s notions of self, fantasy and reality. I like to observe people’s relationships within their settings, places and things, whilst they move between differing levels of truth and imagination; challenging ideas on perception and pretence. As an adult or child we often create situations or say things that allow us to enter into new forms of space and reality.
As an artist Julia often uses the representation of everyday objects, both in and outside of the domestic sphere. She has travelled extensively and has a fascination for cultural ritual, anthropology, history and the arts. She observes people’s relationships within their settings, places and things, whilst they move between differing levels of truth and imagination; challenging ideas on perception and pretence.
Her work aims to transport the viewer between the realms of reality and fiction, whilst exploring destination and dislocation, allowing the unpredictable to happen which sometimes creates tension in her work. Julia enjoys creating site-specific work, for both indoor and outdoor public spaces such as parks, museum and gardens. She works in sculpture, photography, film, installation and mixed media.
Having lectured Fine Art overseas at the National Arts School in Papua New Guinea, Julia has developed links between the local communities through art education projects. This regenerated interest and awareness of positive aspects of their rich cultures, identity, and pride. She has experienced working with organisations such as UNESCO, UNV and WHO, covering issues related to health, skills and education.
Julia is also an experienced curator in the education sector: contemporary art galleries and museums. Exhibitions can involve a breadth of mixed media, which requires technical expertise and assistance, which Julia can offer. She’s also been involved in community projects such as street festivals and promotional launches including the Olympic & Paralympic 2012 and St George’s Day Celebration Art Workshops in Trafalgar Square on behalf of the Lord Mayor and the City of London.
