Bio:

Close and Remote is the collaborative practice of Sophie Mellor and Simon Poulter. We have an ongoing practice that examines modern history as a dynamic process of representation. Taking the every day, peripheral and marginal as starting points, we make artworks that are formed from observations of public places and events. Not the centre, the outside. In our recent project work we are dealing with the fossilisation of data, the inevitability that mass media will create redundant forms and enterprises; along with out of date modes of consumption and production. These might be at close at hand or remotely accessed.

Close and Remote work with an informal set of understandings that inform our practice and process:
• The obvious is always present
• Open Source is useful when applied to new knowledge
• Lifestyles are not defined only by technologies
• Innovation comes from uncertainty
• Aesthetics contain cultural currency
