Evy Benita Kvinlaug
The art and creation process has been part of me for as long as I can remember. I love creating playful art with strong bursts of colour. I love exploring dream imagery through my work. And, I love creating worlds for people to explore.
Back in Norway, where I'm from, I took classes in Visual Communication, Architecture and Scenography, which introduced me to the art of world creation. I got to explore this more extensively while completing a BA in Set Design for Screen at Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London.
During my time at UAL, I got the opportunity to do a work placement in the art department of Kids Company in London. I was tasked with creating playful art pieces that were used to decorate the company's offices and locations. One task I got was to replicate A4 kids drawings onto large pieces of plywood that were to be mounted around the company's playground locations. Getting to work with all those wonderful drawings the kids had made has had a lot of influence of my work as a practitioner.
After UAL, I wanted to find a canvas that would let me create the idea of a fictional world, and situate the viewer inside of it with freedom to explore. That's when I came across the practice of video game development. I got accepted onto an MA in Games Design and Development at the National Film and Television School, where I've been given the opportunities to work with incredibly talented collaborators across all kinds of mediums.
The White Lily Foundation is a charity that houses and educates orphan children in Myanmar and Thailand. I had done a few art pieces for them before, and in early 2017 I got the opportunity to travel with them to Thailand to visit their locations. I got to hold art workshops with the kids, which was hugely inspiring and will continue to influence my work in the future.
I'll be graduating from NFTS in December 2017. At the moment I feel very inspired and excited to begin a new art journey, meet new and inspiring people, and continue the practice of world creation through both digital and physical mediums.
