Elie Zaccour was born in Beirut in 1978 during the height of the Civil War, to a Lebanese father and Italo-Syrian mother, who is also a painter. After moving to London in the late eighties and later studying at Central St Martins, Zaccour has become most renowned for his international achievements as a Creative Director and Film Director, as well as a privately commissioned multi-disciplinary artist working from his East London studio.
Zaccour’s recent body of work 'Memories' is a series of paintings which reflect upon his childhood and adolescence in the tumultuous Middle East. Inspired by the large scale works of artists such as Turner and the French Impressionists, Zaccour uses transient movement and an ethereal colour palette to capture the ephemeral explosions of war and their heightened sensory effect. With some pieces in the series filtered through coloured Perspex, the viewer is given the perspective of the artist as a child peering through a tiny window of the makeshift underground war bunker in Beirut.
His series, 'All I Want' seeks to re-imagine the human body and draw heightened focus to the parts that may entice the viewer. This led him organically to his next series wherein he takes as his muse the women who filled his father’s life with romance, passion and companionship. He is setting out not only to unravel the narratives of the womens’ lives, but to shine a light on the more glamorous pre-war identity of Beirut, overshadowed in the world’s memory by the spectre of war.
Zaccour's graphic and technical background repeatedly informs the aesthetic of his work. He is motivated by the desire to continuously evolve, explore new territory and create works which allow him to exploit the full potential of his medium, whilst staying true to his artistic agency.
