Born in Germany, 1952, Dorothea lives and works as an Artist and Alexander Teacher in London. Dorothea is a latecomer to Fine Art and a passionate sculptor. She studied Fine Art and Sculpture at Kensington and Chelsea College (2006 and 2011), and received a Ba Fine Art and Art Practice from Goldsmiths College, London (2009).
She is a hoarder and has an attachment to objects, things and stuff, which she uses to explore the tension between working with a variety of lowly materials and found objects and traditional materials, such as stone, wood, plaster and clay. Her work draws upon the relationship between the human body, identity and materiality, exploring ideas of power, weakness, fragility and tenderness; as well as our desires for and attachment to objects and materials in our everyday lives. Her installations are investigations into urban architecture and our relationship to it, travelling and tourism, waste and consumerism. She loves etching and wood block printing and has recently started to make collages with paint and found objects.
Previously she has work as a Physiotherapist at the Middlesex Hospital and upon retraining she has been teaching the Alexander Technique since 1984 and is a part-time teacher at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
Dorothea has a studio with Factory Projects in North Acton, London.
