Anna Kenneally

Location: Richmond

I am a painter, working exclusively in oils on a large scale. I am interested in creating balance between abstraction and representation. The subject matter of my work consists mainly of figures shown in dynamic spaces, introducing elements of textile design and landscape. I mirror old master compositions within my work, yet with contemporary portrayal of the figure. I construct scenes using collaged fragments of various photographic sources, enabling me to communicate that the image has been altered from its original state, rather than re recorded. My work mirrors the flat aesthetic of the photograph. Through this we are made aware that the painting originated through the camera lens. I use highly saturated colours, which reinforce the qualities of my medium. I work with my idea of photo-impressionism, investigating the possibilities photography has provided painting. In addition, I create work that interrogates how painters recreate existing paintings, based on their subject, composition or narrative. I am interested in how the outcomes are translated though the individual aesthetic style of the artist.
