The Whitechapel Gallery invites artists living and working in London, who have graduated in the last three years to apply for a residency with the Gallery’s Youth Forum: Duchamp & Sons. This is an exciting opportunity for an artist with a socially-engaged practice to collaborate with young people around the theme Transition and Turnings. Over four months, the artist will work alongside the group in realising a project leading to an exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery (Galleries 5 & 6) in May 2018.
Key aims of the residency:
- To provide an inspiring context for an artist to develop new work in collaboration with young people.
- To explore different, creative ways of using the Gallery as a platform for debate and conversation.
- To create an exhibition together with the Youth Forum and to present this to the public in some form (e.g. a public talk; pamphlet or book).
All sessions with the youth forum will take place in a studio at the Whitechapel Gallery however we are unable to provide a permanent studio space for the course of the residency. We can however provide a space to complete work in the lead up to the exhibition. The artist will receive a fee of £3000 for the project and exhibition.
Applications open from 6 to 26 November 2017 Submissions will be reviewed by the Youth Forum and the Swarovski Foundation Curator: Youth Programmes. The selected artist will be informed of the panel’s decision by 12 January 2018. Applicants should have a socially-engaged practice and experience of working collaboratively.
